Learning-Text #1 – At the Hospital

About this intermediate-level, web-page lesson:

This is a dialog which introduces some intermediate vocabulary words. It is assumed that words in the Basic Word List are known, or can be looked up. Tables 1,2 and 3 show the case-forms which are available for a few singular pronouns and adjectives which appear in the conversation. You would face a choice of the proper form if you were constructing some of the sentences in this dialogue in Russian.

After a brief, 2-line exchange between Sergey and his brother Misha at home, the remaining conversation occurs at the hospital between Sergey and his mother. A complete translation is given at the end.

 

What you need to know:

Before you study the text, confirm your mastery of some very basic words, which are listed below in the form used in the conversations. Refer, if needed, to the Basic Word List or a dictionary. The student should also have had an introduction to perfective vs. imperfective verbs, the past tense, the imperative mood, and noun declension.

Дома

 

Сергей. -Ты чего не спишь в такую рань?

Миша. -Маму ночью в больницу забрали.

 

• дома - at home
• что - what; that (see Table 1)
• такой - such a (see Table 2)
  в такую рань - (coll.) at this ungodly hour
• ночь (f.) - night
  ночью - at/by/during the night
• больница - hospital
• забирать / забрать - take (away)

 

В Больнице

 

Мать. -Ну, как там Миша?

Сергей. -Нормально, у них в школе турнир по футболу.

 

• нормально - O.K.; all right

М. -А как дед?

С. -Как обычно.. Ворчит.

М. -Курила когда-то... В университете... Зажги спичку.

С. -А здесь можно?

 

• когда-то - at one time; once

М. -Нельзя... Нельзя здесь курить... Всё равно -я хочу.. Спичку зажги.. А ты знаешь, твоему отцу нравилось, когда я курила. Он говорил, что я с сигаретой я похожа на одну американскую актрису.. только я не помню какую.. не помню.

С. -А почему бросила?

Translation

 

At Home:

-- How come you’re not sleeping at such an [ungodly] hour?
-- During the night, they took Mama to the hospital.

 

In the hospital:

-- Well, how is Misha there?
-- O.K.. In school they’re having a soccer tournament.

 

-- And how is grandfather?
-- As usual – he will grumble.

 

-- And what do you have at the institute? When’s your field trip?
-- At the end of June, on the twenty-fifth.

 

-- And where are you going?
-- To Vladimir Province, to Oka.

 

-- Beautiful places. Listen, Sergey, give me a cigarette.
-- What?

 

-- A cigarette – give [me one] – I say! I know you have [them]. Well, come on, give me one!
-- But you don’t smoke.

 

-- I smoked at one time. In college. Light a match.
-- Is it allowed?

 

-- It’s not allowed. Smoking is not allowed here. All the same, I want to. Light a match. You know, your father liked it when I smoked. He said that with a cigarette, I resembled a certain American actress, only I don’t remember which one -- I don’t remember.
-- And why did you quit?

 

-- It’s harmful, of course. All right, Sergey, you go! I am getting out this week. Leave me the cigarettes and matches. Go! Go! …Serejha! ,,, All rightl Later. ,,, Go!
